 SPOTLIGHT

Each week we will feature an interesting leader of the Filipino events community - from producers to choreographers to venue operators to performers & more. There are so many amazing personalities and creators and we are excited to share these stories!

Name: Nikolas Banzuela

Role: Model United Nations (MUN) consultant and MUN events community leader in Asia

Describe your role: As a MUN leader, my role is to serve as an example to both new and old MUNers on how to approach MUNs, especially abroad, and be successful the academic sport.

In the three main scopes of MUNs (Delegating, Chairing, and Organizing) I have a distinct role in each.

In delegating, whenever I get to delegate abroad, I take responsibility for being able to give a good impression to different MUNers in the international circuit on Filipino MUNers' capability in more ‘’competitive’’ formats of MUNs. In Asia, there are several countries that adopt the Harvard Rules of Procedure (ROP), which specializes more in debating amongst delegates, compared to the National MUN (NMUN) ROP, which leans more toward lobbying with more vague metrics on awarding, that the Philippine’s MUN circuit usually adopts. I strive to win the MUN competitions I am in to be able to not only pave the way for Filipinos on the possibility of success in MUNs abroad but also show that Filipinos can achieve great feats in competitive MUNs when they put their mind to it

In Chairing, my responsibilities is to make sure the committee sessions are conducted orderly and efficiently. I am tasked to make the committee that I have been put in charge off to be welcoming to all delegates and be able to objectively assess delegates' performance to be given awards that are meritocratic but also to show an example to delegates on what kind of MUNers that can try to become as they continue on their MUN journey.

As an organizer, my main responsibility in whatever role I am assigned to, such as Secretary-General or Chief of Staff, is to make sure the MUN I am part of is of good standards. Whenever I organize with a major leadership position, I strive to make sure my team is efficient and orderly with deliverables and to make sure our standards are able to be off approved with even international delegates. Concurrently, whenever I am not directly organizing, but asked to consult with organizers on how they conduct their MUNs, I instruct the MUNs on what the appropriate ROPs, Dais roles, or even scheduling they could do to make their conference preparations better for the delegates.

Favorite part of your job: I believe my favorite activity in MUNs is whenever there is a chair hangout. After certain days of the conference had ended, I would hang out with the chairing teams on outing around the conference area to relax, have fun, and get to know each other. Some of my favorite chair hangouts would be during the time I was chairing in International MUN Vietnam (IMUN Vietnam), where I and the chairs went around Hanoi during the night market, to shop and explore.

Best performance you ever had and why?
The best MUN I hosted was definitely when I was Secretay-General International MUN Philippines (IMUN Philippines) back in 2022. IMUN Philippines was the FIRST ever physical MUN in the Philippines since the pandemic happened as prior MUNs were all online. Moreover, IMUN Philippines was the most diverse MUN in the country, with over 20 nationalities participating. Subsequently, the MUN had the most amount of speakers, with three Ambassadors appearing and Chel Diokno becoming the closing special speaker. I was an absolute honor to serve as Secretary-General for the most multi-national MUN in the country, and to announce to the whole country, that physical MUNs have returned.

Any upcoming events you're excited for and why?
I'm excited about the upcoming Malaysia World MUN in October. It's the first of its kind in Malaysia and I was invited to chair the Security Council and become a speaker for its MUN Academy to track new MUNers on the fundamentals of MUNs.

What is your favorite movie?
I like ‘’Grave of the Fireflies’’ as I watched it with my friend on Netflix. It was an emotional story that follows two siblings in their survival during WWII in Japan.

It explored themes of desperation, family, and optimism being a luxury as life can make hell on one’s world even when they don't deserve it.

BIG BRAIN MOMENT
