SPOTLIGHT
Each month we will feature an interesting leader of the Filipino events community - from producers to choreographers to venue operators to performers & more. There are so many amazing personalities and creators and we are excited to share these stories!
Name: Kenneth Angelo “Kael” Julio
Role: President of De La Salle Model United Nations Community & Executive Director of Harvard World Model United Nations 2025
Describe your role: I oversee the entire organization, De La Salle Model United Nations Community (DLSMUNCOM), and ensure that all offices are well-coordinated. I also supervise our very own MUN conference, DLSMUN, led by our Secretariat–Mr. Joshua Cote as the Secretary-General, Mr. Nate Arellano as the Deputy Secretary-General, and Ms. Thea Limgenco as the Director-General. While it’s not an easy job to lead the organization, it’s fun at times because of the people I meet, events I join, and opportunities I experience. It becomes easier, however, if you have a good support system, which is why I’m thankful for my Executive Board and Committee, as well as our adviser and alumni who continue to guide me in my position.
Favorite part of your job: The whole organization meets once a month in our monthly meeting to discuss plans, updates, and important announcements, but we’re planning to have our socials and other events soon! Aside from work, we also have small initiatives to bond while still being productive through our office hours and pomodoro nights, where we meet online or in-person to work with school requirements or study to keep each other accountable, respectively!
Best performance you ever had and why?
My last MUN was in high school and they’ve all been memorable, be it a MUN, Model ASEAN, or Model Congress. I’ve been wanting to go back but I just couldn’t make time to join one in college because of the time and resources that one must commit as a delegate. Fun fact, I was supposed to join the 6th DLSMUN but the pandemic happened. I do, however, like organizing and bringing people together because of my passion for community building. Although it has yet to happen since I’m supervising it (and I might be biased with my answer), the 10th DLSMUN has to be the best because it’s officially the largest inter-collegiate MUN conference in the Philippines, introducing FIA and ICC in the circuit!
Any upcoming events you're excited for and why?
There’s still a lot in store for the 10th DLSMUNCOM! Aside from the 10th DLSMUN–the official launch of our 10th anniversary highlighting a decade of Lasallian diplomatic excellence–happening this August 8 to 10, DLSMUNCOM is the host team for the upcoming Harvard World Model United Nations (HWMUN) happening on March 16 to 20 next year! HWMUN is considered to be one of the largest MUNs worldwide and dubbed as the “Olympics of MUN '', which I’m very much excited about. Delegate registration is open, but we’re also looking for volunteers!
Aside from MUNs, we’ll have our first-ever Sustainable Development Goals Summit (SDGS) and the third iteration of our ASEAN Youth Career Summit (AYCS) this September and November, respectively. While it's DLSMUNCOM’s 10th anniversary, we have a lot of firsts, such as our Diplomatic Ball, Community Day, and Alumni Homecoming happening later this year! Stay tuned for the registrations of SDGS and AYCS!
It’s not a celebration if we don’t end it with a bang. We have something exciting to announce by the end of the year! fingers crossed
Name a favorite movie or song you're liking recently: My all-time favorite is Interstellar directed by Christopher Nolan. I can watch it many times without getting bored. In fact, I’ve watched it around 20 times already! I also recently liked Dune directed by Denis Villeneuve. Honestly, anything crime or science fiction-related. While I’m very much a cinephile myself, I also love reading books, so hit me up if you’d like to discuss books and their film adaptations! :)
