 SPOTLIGHT

Each week we will feature an interesting leader of the Filipino events community - from producers to choreographers to venue operators to performers & more. There are so many amazing personalities and creators and we are excited to share these stories!

Name: Julia Alexandra Ibe

Role: Program Associate for United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network-Youth Philippines and Model United Nations (MUN) events community leader in Asia

Describe your role: A lot of people from the Model United Nations (MUN) community called my MUN approach as motherly, because as much as possible I want to hear and take care of everyone. By doing MUNs and MUNs all over again, I harnessed my 21st century skills which are very valuable in our current times. Thus, little did I know that the MUN skills I have will flourish throughout my current career which is working from the advocacy sector.

I believe that my calling is to inspire and empower young people who will be the future leaders, diplomats, and global citizens our world so desperately needs. By being part of MUN as an academic sport, Non-Governmental Organization, and academe—I want future leaders of this country to be equipped with the right mindset in terms of their learning and innovation, critical thinking, problem solving, and cross-cultural collaboration amongst everyone despite their differences. Furthermore, I want to inspire young people not to give up even though there’s a lot of global challenges that are left to us.

Favorite part of your job: My favorite part of MUN conferences is when everyone starts to learn from each other during and after the committee session. I believe that the purpose of MUN is for self-development and going out of your comfort zone. Aside from that, some MUNs have their ‘Gossip Box’ as their way to de-stress from the conference, this activity is just so funny especially when someone is having a crush on you.

Best event you ever went to and why?
Being the Secretary-General of International Model United Nations 2023 was the best MUN I’ve ever attended (Fun fact, I chaired and was the Secretary-General that time). There was a lot of pressure on my end because a lot invested their time just to be in that MUN. Furthermore, I also witnessed the hard work of the delegates from all over the world. With that, I was inspired by them and it touched my heart. We made a lot of friends and memories that will last for a lifetime in that MUN. It was the best for me because I get to witness everyone’s great potential and gave me a peek on how life is if we embody the spirit of multilateralism.

Any upcoming events you're excited for and why?
I am excited for the 25th Benilde Model United Nations because my home model United Nations is in its 25th year and a lot of inspiring advisers such as ambassadors and known personalities are with them as they prepare for the MUN.

BIG BRAIN MOMENT

Interesting facts & trivia from the Philippines culture & events community

Trivia Question

Answer: Pedicab

The pedicab, also known as the "cycle rickshaw," is more commonly referred to in the Philippines as "traysikad" or "padyak." These terms literally mean "stamp the feet" and describe the action of pushing the bicycle pedals with sufficient force to transport passengers.

Interesting Culture Fact!

This tradition of sending guests home with food is a simple expression of our desire to provide for the people we love and care for.
