 SPOTLIGHT

Each week we will feature an interesting leader of the Filipino events community - from producers to choreographers to venue operators to performers & more. There are so many amazing personalities and creators and we are excited to share these stories!

Name: Juan Paolo Ching

Role: CAPable 2022 Team Leader - UP Career Assistance Program

Describe your role: CAPable 2022 is one of the six main events of UP Career Assistance Program (UP CAP), and I was tasked to head the project. My main roles were to plan out the vision and executions of the event, assign tasks, check outputs, as well as convene the five (5) teams working on the event - communications, external affairs, internal affairs, operations, and finance & legal affairs.

Favorite part of your job: My favorite part in being team leader is the alignment meetings, because there I get to interact with the teams involved and get to see the project slowly coming to life. It is also the time for me to help out, resolve issues, manage risks, and motivate my team to really push forward.

Best event you ever went to and why?
The best event I ever went to was in UP CAP's Career Fair 2023 where it was held in GT-Toyota Asian Center Auditorium. It was such a great event to be in because I got to interact with a lot of companies and get freebies and merch along the way. The energy in the event was so high and there were a lot of people there so it was a fun experience.

Any upcoming events you're excited for and why?
Definitely UP Diliman's UP Fair!

It's a week wherein organizations get to organize concert events for the people and get to showcase their advocacies to the attendees. Aside from that, it is a great time for people to unwind, enjoy, and interact with their friends as they sing-along with the performers.

What's a valuable tip you have for fellow events community leaders/organizers?
It is ALWAYS a must to have a 'Plan B' prepared (or even until Plan E if you can).

Heading projects especially events has a lot of risk factors and as organizers we need to be able to mitigate those risks and prepare if and when they manifest. Playing around with costs, backups, and event buffers can really go a long way in being able to smoothly execute your plans.

Name a favorite movie or song you're liking recently.
The song that I am liking recently is 'New Romantics' by Taylor Swift.

BIG BRAIN MOMENT

Interesting facts & trivia from the Philippines culture & events community

Trivia Question

Answer: Mammangi Festival

The Mammangi Festival takes place in Ilagan City as the Corn Capital of the Philippines. The event had its comeback this 2023 after three years of the global pandemic. The people of Ilagan celebrated their local harvests and the farmers behind their corns through eco-tourism booths, a pageant, a barangay (village) night, as well as a street dance and showdown competition that had a grand display of corn-themed costumes and crafts.

Interesting Culture Fact!

Among the numerous mountains in the Philippines, Mt. Apo is the highest, boasting a height of 9,692 ft. Local and foreign hikers enjoy the sights of this mountain but also explore alternatives such as Mt. Pulag, Mt. Arayat, Mt. Kitangland, Mt. Batulao, among others.
