We are joining the locals just in time for the celebration of their most historic commemorations in the province: Trece de Agosto: Ang Araw ng Kalayaan ng Lalawigan ng Quezon, as well as the Araw ng Tayabas - the declaration of love for their land back in 1898 and a celebration of their freedom as a people.

There will be meaningful and colorful displays of their rich culture: booths at Niyogyugan from each town of the province, showcasing their local arts, crafts, and culinary traditions. Alongside these, we will be visiting the landmarks that reveal the Quezonians' pride of place: the churches, civic buildings, places of origin, and some houses of its most prominent sons and daughters.

 SPOTLIGHT

Each week we will feature an interesting leader of the Filipino events community - from producers to choreographers to venue operators to performers & more. There are so many amazing personalities and creators and we are excited to share these stories!

Name: Alfredo III Sanchez

Role: Former Co-Commissioner and Project Head of One Big Pride ‘22

Describe your role: I primarily supervised the strategic organization and implementation of the annual Pride event of Ateneo, One Big Pride, during the last academic year (AY 2022-2023). This entailed a series of intradepartmental and inter-organizational communications, logistical management, human resource supervision, and more.

Favorite part of your job: I loved working with and for the community. Being one of the project heads of One Big Pride 2022 exposed me to the realities of individuals in the community (both the colorful and vibrant versions of it, as well as the difficult realities they face), and it ignited my spirit to fight for our advocacy. Doing this made the job feel easy.

Best event you ever went to and why?
I believe that for an event to be successful, the mere execution itself is only half of the marks you want to achieve. The other half should be measured by its impact on its constituents. And I hate to be biased, but I believe that One Big Pride 2022 was able to cover both criteria!

More than the commendable execution itself, I believe that the event gave people hope. Seeing people's reactions and feedback on the event assured our team that we were able to fulfill our purpose - to be the catalyst for change, bring hearts and lives together, and inspire individuals. Additionally, we broke many milestones and preconceived barriers in the event that made me and many individuals from the community (inside and outside Ateneo) happy and satisfied.

Any upcoming events you're excited for and why?
One Big Pride 2023 and Niki’s Concert

What's a valuable tip you have for fellow events community leaders/organizers?
Be as detailed as possible with your event's timeline, delegate tasks clearly, create a tracker for your deliverables, and foster a conducive working environment for the people you manage.

BIG BRAIN MOMENT

Interesting facts & trivia from the Philippines culture & events community

Trivia Question

Answer: Austronesian

Some Southeast Asian nations share similar-sounding words in their native languages because they fall under one language family called “Austronesian”. There are terms that they share, which may somehow different in spelling but possess the same meaning. As an illustration, “kucing” in Indonesian, “kuching” in Malay and “kuting” in Filipino translate to their English counterpart known as “cat”. However, there are times in which their vocabularies have words with exact spellings. For example, the translation for the English word “right” is “kanan” across all three languages.

Interesting Culture Fact!

Waray-Waray, Bikol, Cebuano are some of the several languages spoken by our country.
