 SPOTLIGHT

Each week we will feature an interesting leader of the Filipino events community - from producers to choreographers to venue operators to performers & more. There are so many amazing personalities and creators and we are excited to share these stories!

Name: Zandra Imasa

Role: Fashion Designer and Owner of Zandra Lim Designs

Describe your role: As the owner of the company, I am responsible in overseeing all aspects of the business. I work with my team closely, leading and directing them in creating new designs and making sure that our products are visually appealing, functional, and innovative. I also oversee the production process, ensuring that we meet our deadlines, stay within budget, and produce products that meet our quality standards. Additionally, I take charge of marketing and sales, devising strategies that will help to promote our brand to potential customers by organizing fashion events.

Favorite part of your job: As a designer, I find that I am able to produce my best work when my clients entrust me with the creative freedom to design and execute their projects according to my own vision. This level of trust and creative freedom not only allows me to showcase my skills and expertise but also results in a more satisfying and fulfilling experience for both myself and my clients.

Best performance you ever had and why?
The Unveil Bridal Fair, which was held recently at the Edsa Shangri-La Hotel. I enjoy the part of the event where I got to meet brides-to-be, wedding planners, and fellow fashion enthusiasts, who were all eager to see the latest collections of different bridal designers.

What's a valuable tip you have for fellow events community leaders/organizers?
When organizing an event specially bazaars or fairs, it is important to brief each supplier before the actual event takes place. This is to make sure that the suppliers are fully aware of the event flow and their participation or responsibilities on the event so they are able to prepare accordingly.

Current obsession: Lately, I have been really into taking care of my lips, and I have found that using lip oil has become somewhat of an obsession. I love how it makes my lips feel soft, and I have been experimenting with different brands and flavors to find my perfect match.

BIG BRAIN MOMENT

Interesting facts & trivia from the Philippines culture & events community

Trivia Question

Answer: Fish sauce (patis)
Filipinos take delight in condiments and sauces (sawsawan) like fish sauce (patis) because of the great level of umami and tang that these provide. In Doreen Fernandez’s 1998 essay entitled “Culture Ingested: On the Indigenization of Philippine Food” and Carmen Guerrero Nakpil’s work entitled “Where is the Patis?”, patis has been a gastronomical symbol for Filipinos, regardless of where they are. These respected authors shared how patis has provided a sense of comfort and a reminder of one’s motherland for Philippine tourists literally carrying it to pour on foreign dishes, a Filipino couple craving for it on a honeymoon abroad and the like.

Interesting Culture Fact!

A boodle fight started as a military form of eating in which soldiers stand shoulder-to-shoulder by a banana leaf-covered table and consume various food items placed on the leaf as fast as possible. Although this concept became ingrained to Philippine culture through American influence, it has been remodeled and reinvented with the addition of Filipino dishes, emphasis on using hands to eat each food component and more. This kind of uniqueness paved the way for boodle fight feasts to become part of cultural activities that Filipinos introduce to foreign tourists and expatriates.
